The Stone Soup Legend

Once there was a wandering soldier who arrived in a faraway village where there was almost nothing to eat.

He announced that he was going to make "stone soup" to share with the villagers. With a lot of fussing, he pulled a pot from his wagon, filled it with water, and dropped a plain old stone into it. He sniffed the broth and licked his lips, making the crowd that had gathered around hungrier and hungrier.

This smart soldier had only to express a desire for cabbage and salt beef to add some more flavor, and one by one the villagers began to run home to find something to put into the pot. They gave what little potatoes, onions, carrots, and mushrooms they had, and soon there was a delicious meal for all.
